Moving Checklist

• Whether moving yourself, or hiring a moving company - get at least two quotes from truck rental companies and/or moving companies.

• Create a moving folder to keep all quotes, receipts, and/or other pertinent moving information.

• The IRS may offer deductions for moving expenses - check with them for more information.

• Do research of your new community - the Chamber of Commerce is a good place to start. Also check the internet.

• Create a floor plan of your new residence - this will help you lay out where you would like your personal property to be placed in your new home.

• Talk to your insurance agent - let them know of your move to see if your can transfer coverage or need to research other companies.

• Budget for moving expenses - purchase and begin gathering boxes and moving supplies.

1 Month Before Your Move

• File a change of address with the postal service - if you don't know your new address ask the postal service to hold your mail.

• Call the utility company to schedule the disconnection/transfer of your utilities.

• Arrange to have records transferred - dental, school, medical and veterinarian records all need to be transferred if you plan on transferring to other facilities.

• Call to cancel/transfer subscriptions - such as newspapers, magazines, lawn services, etc.

• Begin to pack items you seldom use. This will help you decide what you will take with you or get rid of. Donate items that are in good condition, but you have not used in over a year. Garage sales are also a good idea.

• Confirm truck rental and/or moving company reservations.

1 Week Before Your Move

• Drain gas and oil from your household belongings you plan to move - such as lawn mower, grill, heaters, etc.

• Finish packing your items to be moved label boxes by rooms. Pack your valuable items separately.

• Call the utility company to verify the connection of your services at your new home - they should be scheduled to be turned on the day before you move in.

• Empty, clean and defrost your refrigerator, 24 hours before you plan to move it.

Moving Day

• Make sure you are prepared to pay your movers with cash, credit card, certified check or travelers check - before your possessions are unloaded.

• Note all utility meter readings at both residences.

• Be present at your new address to help direct the movers.

• Inspect your belongings for any damages or lost items before your sign the paperwork.
